Madagascar: English Programme Teacher, Madagascar

Volunteer teachers work through a supported, structured programme in both bush and town settings as part of our International and National team, gaining the range of skills and experiences required in a development context.

Based in the coastal town of Fort Dauphin in the southeast of Madagascar, this role will support Azafady’s English Programme. Successful teachers will work within a combined Malagasy and International team to assist in the implementation of a range of teaching projects including support to the local middle and secondary schools, marketing English for our Stitch Ste Luce project, Bush based teaching to adults and students, 1:1 teaching for NGO partner staff and the development of adult education in business English within the town.

This exciting post would suit someone with some experience of English teaching who is looking to widen this over a variety of placements and begin a career in international English teaching.

Position Overview:

Long term teachers work with the Azafady team in Madagascar for 6-12 months (shorter placements can be found on our website). Based in Azafady's office in Fort Dauphin, the teacher will be responsible for working across a range of teaching sessions requiring skills in both planning and implementing the teaching across our English teaching programme.

Main Tasks of the Role:

· To support teachers in the secondary school in Fort Dauphin to deliver English lessons within their classes through the provision of conversation classes

· To support secondary school teachers to give English language lessons to Baccalaureate students where required

· To provide vocabulary and English language classes to Azafady’s Malagasy staff on their project areas

· To work alongside international Pioneer and ACP volunteers in developing resources for rural English teaching in schools and communities in the bush

· To develop and teach business and marketing English sessions to the Stitch Ste Luce group on

· To develop and teach sessions to various groups in Fort Dauphin including working with the Chamber of Commerce on developing skills in business English

· To support the work of the English teaching projects, including the development of CDs for students to enable practice at home or where teachers are not available

· To support the work of the English Programme Co-ordinator in further developing the reach of the English teaching programme

· To provide specific English language workshops to rural and urban groups, for example forest guides, the tourism office, taxi drivers etc.

· To develop projects and activities for targeting wider audiences, including radio programmes

· To provide specialist support to other Azafady departments involved in English provision, for example the rural based beginner and elementary Saturday classes.

· To support the English Programme Co-ordinator in developing Azafady’s English teaching strategy and future programme activities, including further expansion into rural areas

· To help with the publicity of the English Programme including website updates, Facebook, short videos etc

· To develop, record and manage the procedures for the English Programme

Contract type: Voluntary

Reporting to: English Programme Co-ordinator and Director of Programmes and Operations

Required skills:

The successful applicant will:

· Hold a TEFL qualification, or higher

· Have experience of living and working abroad, preferably in a least developed country

· Be capable and comfortable adapting to life in a least developed country with sometimes basic living conditions

· Be able to adjust to life in another culture and a foreign language and be able to work at all times with cultural sensitivity

· Be able to function within a small team and support others with whom you live and work

· Be able to work positively and responsibly within small teams, acting as a professional ambassador for Azafady at all times Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Azafady’s ethos and approach and be a good ambassador for Azafady at all times

• Have passion, curiosity and motivation for the job and the ability to enthuse others

• Have the ability and desire to work with teams from different economic and cultural backgrounds and across multiple language barriers

· Demonstrate proven ability to recognise and appropriately deal with challenging situations

• Demonstrate an awareness of and comfort with increased social and professional responsibility, working at all times with cultural sensitivity and respect

• Demonstrate the ability, social skills and confidence to give clear guidance and support to other members of the team in respect of the philosophy and procedures of Azafady in order to protect both their safety and the reputation of the NGO

• Have a flexible and patient attitude

• Have excellent problem-solving skills

• Be able to work both independently and as part of a team

The successful candidate will:

• Be able to financially support him or herself for the duration of his/her stay (advice on individual fundraising available)

• Be equipped with a laptop computer (non-Tablet kind)
